Understanding The Hidden Gems in Waveendz’s Latest Single “7 Diamonds"
Waveendz’s new single “7 Diamonds” is a total bop. Based out of New Brunswick with an Afrobeat influence, their music is undeniably inspired by an amalgamation of cultures. Their take on hip-hop, pop, rap and R&B is definitely flavoured by ACG (Animation, Comic and Games).
Most memorably, the keys that kick in around a minute in, bear a strong resemblance to 8-bit music straight from the arcade era, taking us back and making us nostalgic. The lyrics touch on this idea of remaining humbled by our roots and our past, “ain’t nothing changed, struggle real” and “don’t take things for granted / cause you might lose it all at any moment”.
Waveendz is not scared to mess around with our expectations. Four times in the song, they bring the music to halt, almost like a slow-mo scene in an action movie. This happens for two lyrics “got them feeling it in the soul” and “I just need to go get it”. Almost as if to jarringly make us stop and take a moment and feel it in the soul, or to make us wait while they go and get the “diamonds in the front”.
Overall, the song is about being proud of your achievements, and to recognize that when you’re succeeding in life it is well-deserved. We are reminded that “you don’t have to be sorry / if you’re getting doe / you deserve it bro”. With this sentiment in mind, we’re encouraged to stay true to ourselves, keep our head up high and not hide the fruits of our labor.
